Smart Solutions’ Scotland office helps 200 people into work every day. Based in Bellshill, in the southeast of Glasgow city centre, it is Smart Solutions’ sole Scottish base.
The Glasgow office opened in 2013 in response to a gap in the recruitment market. It formed part of Smart Solutions’ wider expansion plans across other regions of the UK, allowing it to support existing clients with operations north of the border.
The Scotland office specialises in waste sector recruitment, ranging from waste collection roles to on-site attendants at household waste recycling centres. It supports clients that are working in partnership with local authorities, such as Biffa, and supplies labour to two new energy sites: Levenseat Renewable Energy in Lanarkshire and Viridor’s recycling and renewable energy centre in Glasgow (GRREC).
As there are no ‘On Site’ bases in Scotland, where Smart Solutions account managers base themselves at a client’s site, the four permanent members of staff working from the Glasgow office are regularly on the road, travelling to meet clients wherever they are located.
The geography of Scotland also poses recruitment challenges. Filling vacancies in hard-to-reach areas is difficult – the labour market is weaker and the local transport infrastructure is often less connected. As there is often a lack of candidate availability – through a relatively low unemployment rate and a shortage of skilled labourers – the Scotland team knows that harnessing positive relationships with clients pays dividends in encouraging ‘word of mouth’ marketing, particularly in smaller and remote towns.
Smart Solutions in Scotland currently has clients spanning the breadth of the country, from the west coast, through its central belt to Edinburgh and East Lothian, with a view to further expanding its reach northwards into areas such as Perth and Aberdeen in the future.
Looking to the future, the branch plans to diversify the sectors in which it works, helping to recruit candidates with different skills and expertise. It has also recently been supporting recruitment into production operative roles in manufacturing, using Smart Solutions’ well-earned reputation in the sector as a positive precursor for future client wins.
